Artist Bio

 

 

ALISHA DESAI is a Brooklyn-based artist and has lived here since she graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 2006.

She is a professional dancer, choreographer, actor/singer, visual artist, and educator. She has a passion and expertise in many Indian dance styles; Bollywood, Bhangra, Bharatantyam, Semi-Classical, etc. Alisha first discovered her passion for Indian dance when she spent a year abroad intensively training in Bharatanatyam at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in India. Since then she has honed her craft and expanded her knowledge of Indian dance by working with the best Dance Companies in NYC. She has had the privilege to tour nationally and internationally. Alisha has made TV appearances on Good Morning America and Lifetime TV. She is a core member of Ajna Dance Company, AATMA Performing Arts, and dances with Surati for Performing Arts and Education, Sonalee, Vyas Dance Company, and Anil Diwakar.  While working with top artists in the field, Alisha has worked on cultivating her own independent dance style and creative expression. She has taken on many solo projects including live performances, video projects, and workshops, and was City Arts Corps Grant recipient in 2021. She loves sharing her craft with diverse audiences locally and around the globe

Alisha has a background in theater, film, and vocal performance, in addition to dance. Notable Theater projects include Hypokrit Theater’s Chokher Bali, Elodie Lauten’s The Death of Don Juan -a modern opera, and a Broadway Workshop for Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding. Alisha also toured for over 2 years with The NiteStar Project, an outreach theater-in-education program. Film credits include feature films Karma Road and Captured Hearts.

Additionally, Alisha is the owner and designer of DESAI DESIGNS (www.desai.design) a culturally inspired fashion line featuring her original artwork. Alisha hopes to continue to grow as an artist in all capacities, to inspire and to be inspired!
